Tasman Highway Corridor

A route between the Hobart Airport and Hobart connecting to Cambridge, Mornington, Warrane, Rosny Park along its length. Shared pathways and bike lanes are being installed incrementally.

Tasman Bridge to Sorell

In November 2020 the Department of State Growth released a Sorell to Hobart planning study which prioritises the completion of connected cyclepaths along the Tasman Hwy between the Mornington roundabout and the Tasman Bridge, including a connection to the planned Bellerive Ferry Terminal. An upgrade of the paths on the causeways to Sorell and a new shared path between the Airport interchange and the causeway is included.

Rosny Hill Road to Mornington roundabout

Anyone who has driven through the Mornington roundabout at peak times will know how difficult it is in a car. On foot or bicycle it is virtually impossible to cross the road without taking considerable risks. In 2009  a shared path was constructed around the perimeter of the roundabout but it did little to improve safety and amenity for people walking and cycling. A grade-separated crossing (underpass) from the end of Bligh St to the eastern side of South Arm Hwy is the best option. In 2018 Cycling South commissioned a feasibility report, which identified an underpass beneath the Hobart on-ramp (see image). Clarence City Council also had a report done that identified an underpass from the end of Bligh St to the Mornington Inn.

In 2024 $100M was allocated to improvements at the Mornington roundabout and designs are underway. More>>

Mornington to Cambridge

In 2010 Clarence City Council installed bike lanes on Kennedy Drive in Cambridge, which provides a quieter, alternative route to the Tasman Hwy. Council extended the lanes in 2014 along Cambridge Road to Cambridge primary school. In 2017 Council installed bike lanes on Cambridge Road between Mornington Roundabout and Pass Road.

In 2024 work is underway to look at improving the section between Pass Road and Belbins Road interchange.

Airport to Sorell Causeway

In 2018 designs were prepared to replace the airport roundabout with an interchange. The original design included an overpass linking Kennedy Drive and Holyman Ave, with bike lanes and a shared path and signalised on/off ramps. The constructed version was changed, introducing a confusing peanut-shaped roundabout which is challenging for people cycling. Cycling South lobbied for a shared path in the design to bypass the roundabout but it still requires the crossing of a couple of slip lanes.

As part of the Airport interchange project in 2022 a shared path was constructed on the northern side of the highway but stops 400m before Barilla Bay. The next section will be constructed as part of the causeway upgrades.

The highway makes access to the Clarence MTB Park difficult, with the only viable access point from North Warrane on the northern side of the Tasman Hwy.

2012. - As part of the Fairway Rise Retirement Village a 1.8m wide shared use pathway was constructed between Gordans Hill Road and the eastern boundary of the retirement village.

2015 - Clarence City Council completed an extension of the path alongside the Fairway Rise Retirement Village to Flagstaff Gully Road.

2024 - At the request of Clarence Council, the state government has created a gap in the guard rail near the mountain bike park entrance to allow riders to reach the park from North Warrane.
