Cycling, combined with public transport, can be a convenient way to go places that are too far to ride. This may involve leaving bikes at a secure facility or taking it with you on a ferry or bus.

Park & Ride - Huntingfield & Kingston

In 2021 Cycling South made a representation to the Development Applications for the Park and Rides proposed for Huntingfield and Firthside in Kingston requesting:

More suitable bicycle parking racks that don't require lifting the bike
A refuge on Huntingfield Ave to make it easier for people walking or cycling to the Park and Ride from to cross the road
A new path on the southern side of Algona Road between the underpass and Huntingfield Ave so people walking or cycling can avoid crossing the road at the busy Huntingfield roundabout
A refuge on Groningen Ave in Firthside to make crossing the road to the Park and Ride safer
Waymarking active travel routes to the Park and Rides

Park & Ride - Claremont

In 2022 the Department of State Growth undertook consultation on a proposed Park and Ride in Claremont. Cycling South made a submission with some suggestions incorporated into the final plan released in 2024 such as improving the connection to the Intercity Cycleway and upgrading path widths.

Information has not been provided on the layout of the bike parking cage, the types of racks that bikes can be locked to or how security will be managed.

Park & Ride - Rokeby

In 2022 the Department of State Growth released plans for a Park and Ride on the corner of Pass Road and South Arm Highway. Cycling South made the following comments:

The shared paths on Pass Road should go behind the bus stops to minimise conflict with people waiting or getting on/off a bus.
Priority at road crossings within the park and ride should be given to people walking and cycling.
Bicycle parking should be a mixture of hanging rails and floor mounted rails and accommodate e-bikes and cargo bikes

Derwent Ferries - Bellerive

A ferry service between Sullivans Cove and Bellerive commenced in 2021. For the first 12 months people riding a bike travelled for free.

Derwent Ferries - Lindisfarne

2024 - Clarence City Council carried out consultation on a ferry terminal on the northern side of the Tasman Bridge at Lindisfarne. Two locations were being considered - the end of Natone St by Anzac Park or the Lindisfarne Sailing Club. Both are accessible from the Clarence Foreshore Trail for people arriving by bike but Natone St has more space for facilities such as secure bicycle parking.

Bikes on Buses

Bikes can't be carried on Metro buses in Hobart at the present time although external bike racks have been trialled.

In February 2007 Hobart City Council subsidised a trial Fern Tree Bus-Bike Shuttle Service to transport cyclists uphill from Hobart to Fern Tree. The trial ran on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 10 weeks until mid-April departing 5.45pm from the city and stopping at the top of Strickland Ave, Chimney Pot Hill Rd and Fern Tree.
2011 - Metro Tasmania installed a bike rack on one bus for six months to train drivers and for route assessments.
2013 - Metro trialled bike racks on 10 buses in the January school holidays in 2013 to Rosny Park Tranmere & Camelot Park (Route 615), Strickland Ave in South Hobart (Route 45) and Fern Tree (Route 48). The trial presented operational difficulties and had low levels of use so Metro did not proceed with a wider roll out.
