Glenorchy CBD links
The Glenorchy CBD is a major destination and access can be improved by providing links along waterways, easements and roadways.
Peltro Street & Terry St
2024. Plans are being developed for the intersection of Rokeby Road and Acton Road, adjacent to Lauderdale Primary School. Cycling South has provided feedback on the need to provide a connection for a future shared path on the northern side of the intersection, as well as sealed shoulders/bicycle lanes for road cyclists. It is anticipated that the intersection will be signalised.
Humphreys Rivulet Track
Humphreys Rivulet runs between Wellington Park and Elwick Bay and is located between Chapel St and Tolosa St. A large section of the alighment provides a fantastic location for a shared walking and cycling track. A pathway has been identified for the section between the Intercity Cycleway and Murrayfield Close which will provide a traffic-free connection to bypass the busiest section of Tolosa St.
The route includes 2 schools and 2 parks and provides a link between residential areas and the services and shops in Glenorchy CBD.
The stage between Main Road and Farnell Place has the most immediate benefit if constructed as it can be joined up with local streets to provide a walking and cycling route that avoids the busy Tolosa St traffic.
-
2012 - Cycling South was successful in obtaining a $10,000 Active Transport Grant from the State Government (matched with funding from Glenorchy City Council) to have a concept plan prepared for a concrete pathway along Humphreys Rivulet. The report identified 4 stages:
-
Intercity Cycleway to Main Road
-
Main Road to Farnell Place
-
Farnell Place to Brent St
-
Brent St to Murrayfield Court
Barossa Creek Trail
2013 - Plans have been developed by GCC to realign the connection between the Intercity Cycleway and Barossa Creek Trail near the YMCA. Currently the trail goes through a carpark and the plans for the new alignment show a crossing of the railway closer to Peltro St and constructing a trail on GCC land at KGV just north of the YMCA carpark. Funding is required to construct the path.
Tolosa Street
2023 - Council constructed a shared path between Tolosa Park and the on-road bike lanes by the entrance to Dominic College. The path provides a last link to Tolosa Park and the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park.
