Do you have an old bike you no longer use? You can donate it to a community organisation to pass it on to someone who will get good use out of it. Or learn how to restore an old bike yourself to make it rideable again.
Hobart Bike Kitchen
A group of volunteers who restore and fix donated and salvaged bicycles to provide a source of low cost bikes in hobart. They also run bike maintenance skills classes and provide the use of tools to allow people to restore their own bike. For more information see www.hobartbikekitchen.org or email
Third Place Communities Community Bike Program Each year they run a program in conjunction with Geilston Bay High School, Risdon Vale Primary, & Risdon Vale Neighbourhood Centre. The program consists of restoring old bicycles alongside young disadvantaged people between 10 and 16 years, who are economically, educationally, and socially disadvantaged. By disadvantaged we mean lacking the basic resources and environment necessary for an equal opportunity and start in society. Generally, these young people lack the confidence, competence, encouragement, and relationships necessary to move positively into the future. Through the Community Bikes Program we aim to help these young people create a more stable platform for life. The mentors teach the young people to restore bikes, but also interact with them about many aspects of life. We believe that through an informal mentoring program these young people can begin to acquire some of the essential experiences needed, and as a result, create a brighter future.
At the end of each year they give away the restored bikes to families & schools in need. This also teaches the young people the positive experience of giving—especially giving away something they have laboured long and hard for. In 2009 they gave away approximately 100 bikes.
